he's a tough boss when it comes to his employees...the people that work with him are all family and close friends...his wife Deborah Matsuzawa aka Debbie is my boyfriend's sister and he has worked at the downtown restaurant until they open the other two in meridian and not once has he complain about the way he is being treated...
But let me tell you this, HE DOES NOT TREAT HIS EMPLOYEES LIKE SLAVES. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND :))))))
Not bad unless Shige has been harassing his staff again – Shige treats his employees like slaves. It's a miracle he hasn't been sued yet, especially by the woman who have had the mishap of employment there. Mrs Shige is also notoriously abusive to staff.
The food is okay, but you need to decide what kind of place you want to support. There's a lot of good sushi out there.
Want an incredible sushi experience? – Over a decade ago, before sushi became trendy, Shige's was the epitome of authenticity combined with his own personal culinary flair. Today, he has maintained that harmony without compromising his style. We live over and hour away, and it has been our weekly dinner spot for years because of the amazing food and atmosphere. To date, any Japanese restaurant we have tried since has paled greatly in comparison with Shige's, including the Las Vegas mecca of exclusive dining experiences. In addition to the location in downtown Boise, the layout of the restaurant complete with patio, has a congenial feel to it. Once inside, Shige and his staff are always quick to acknowledge and welcome you into the intimate and cozy setting. There's something on the menu for everyone, whether sushi and sashimi or tempura is your preference, and all at reasonable prices. We try something new almost every visit and are never disappointed with taste, quality, or quantity.
Best "no frills" sushi in town. – Other reviews say Shige's is "overrated" etc, but those reviews are over a year old. If you want "exciting" sushi, there are alternatives such as Zutto, (promoted as New York style) or Koi downtown. Anyway, I've never had sushi in New York, but I've eaten lots in San Francisco, San Jose's Japan Town, Seattle and Portland. And those towns are a lot closer to Japan than New York is. Isn't there a commercial about stuff made in New York City??? Oh did I mention my wife is Japanese and I've eaten lots of sushi in Japan as well? Point is, Shige's has top quality fish at a good price and Shige is a stand-up fellow himself. And you can get real Yakitori on a little grill brought to your table, which I've had a hard time finding in ANY Japanese restaurant. For the price and quality and amount, Shige's is our choice for Japanese food in Boise.
Overrated – For Boise, Shige's is an institution, and deservedly so. Chef Shige was one of the very first in Boise, and has consistantly been making good sushi. Good sushi... not excellent. After a few soirees, the selection gets routine, the variety limited. That said, the fish is usually fresh and if you sit at the bar, the chef will fill you in on what is and what is not good. The "floaty-boat" bar is faster, and less expensive, but the service is much worse.
Shige's is one of the best in Boise, and you will have to go out of town to get better. But, if you are used to the exciting variety and freshness in bigger cities, you may come away disappointed.
Best in Town – The amount of sushi you get with your order is as good as the food. The fish is the freshest in town. Cooked food is just as good as the sushi so if you don't like sushi you can still get great japanese food.
